In general

Be bold. If you think something should be done differently, change it.

Well, OK: if you're making major structural changes, discuss it first (leave a comment or post a discussion on the Story Games site). But don't feel you have to ask before changing or adding pages.

Links

General structure

The general structure for the links sections, as it stands at the moment, goes like this:

1. Start with a link to a good overview of the subject, under the heading "Starting points".

2. Under the same heading, introduce three or four other links, in rough order of usefulness. These can be less useful overviews or discussions of specific sub-topics.

3. Under the heading "Other resources", using bullet points if possible, introduce any other useful links. These might include in-depth discussions of specific topics or seriously derailed discussions which contain useful ideas.

4. Under the heading "Searches", list any terms that are useful to search for and where the person should search. Do this even if it seems obvious ("Search the Publishing Forum of the Forge for 'Fonts'"), because it encourages people to search.

5. Under the heading "Related topics", link to any other relevant pages in this wiki.

Break this structure if it seems wrong, but use it as a starting point. For example, many topics miss out one or more of the above headings, if there's little useful information that would fit there.

Ranking

The links are implicitly ranked in terms of usefulness. The first link listed (the overview) is the most useful. The second link listed is the second most useful. And so on.

Be bold about changing this ranking. If you think a link is more useful than the one ranked above it, move it up. If you think a link is less useful, move it down.

In general, you should only move a link up or down the ranking by one place. If a link is near the bottom of the ranking, and you think it's useless, then remove it.

If you think you have found a link that is more useful than all the other links currently in the topic, and it's a good overview, put it right in at the top.

After you have changed the ranking, tidy the text up so it's still readable.

Tips

Some tips on including links:

  • Post useful, practical resources, not theoretical discussions or "What do you think of this idea?" threads
  • Read things before posting them. Some threads have interesting titles but the discussions themselves are dull.
  • Be selective. If a resource is only barely useful, don't include it.
  • Describe why a resource is useful. For example, "Although this discussion gets argumentative, it contains some useful ideas, especially at the end."
  • Consider the audience. Although a link may be useful for an experienced developer, it may go over the heads of people trying to learn the subject.
